Almeria Province
The City....
Almeria enjoys a priveliged position and climate. Situated in the south-east of Spain, the most oriental of the provinces in Andalusia, within it`s 8.774 square kilometres that is an unusual variety in the landscape, that goes from the arid desert of Tabernas to the snow caped peaks of Sierra Nevada.
It`s coasts have spectacular volcanic and coral reef beaches as well as wide and long that go on for miles with no agglomerations of people and with the least days of rain in the whole of Europe and the most days of Sun.
The City of Almeria is situated in the centre of a bay of the Mediterranean Sea and is surrounded by mountains, with several ranges like the Gador, Alhamilla. At the moment the population is 180.000 inhabitants.
History of Almeria.
The hill of the Alcazaba has been lived on since prehistoric times, from the bronze age. Later in the pre-roman epoc there have been Phoenician findings. From Roman times there are numerous ceramic items that have been found in excavations, starting from the first century of our era to the 5th and 6th centuries.
The city as such was founded in the year 955 that was part of “Urci” a inhabited area situated in the inland behind Almeria. The most trustworthy information about Moorish Almeria is from the 9th Century, during several centuries there have been many battles between the moors and the Christians until the 15th Century when the Christian soldiers marched into the city.
Nowadays Almeria is a prosperous province mainly for it`s greenhouse agriculture as the area is know as the farm of Europe, and obviously Turism that is mainly on the coastline, but there also villages in the mountains that are getting more and more popular.
Golf
We have three golf courses in the west area of the province near to Roquetas de Mar. One is in Playa Serena (18hole) this is in Roquetas de mar. Envia Golf that is 12 kilometres from Roquetas that is in the mountains. Almerimar(18hole) that is 18 kilometres away from Roquetas . Also in the east of the Province that are other one`s like Desert Springs(18hole), Alboran Golf(18hole) where the Mediterranean games in 2005 were held..
Nature
Nature park Punta Entinas in Playa Serena that extendys with 14 kilometres of beaches. They are protected beaches with dunes and a sector with lakes that many year ago were used as salt lakes. This is the perfect spot for bird watching as the area has been declared a special protected zone for birds, more than 150 species have been recorded in this wetland part of the area, including waders, flamingos and the rare Audouin's gull.
Nature Park of Cabo de Gata. One of the coastal strips of greater beauty and ecological wealth of the western Mediterranean and an extension of 34,000 has, to which there is to add a marine strip of one mile in width (12,000 has).
Cabo de Gata is the dead ground marine-terrestrial of greater surface and ecological relevance of all European Western Mediterranean.
Besides the Cabo de Gata has other categories of protected areas: A Special Protection Area for birds [SPA (1989)]; Wetland of International Importance [Ramsar (1989) The Salinas del Cabo de Gata]; Biosphere Reserve (1997); Specially Protected Area Mediterranean Importance [SPAMI (2001)]
Nature Park of Sierra Nevada is a dramatic, rugged and extensive mountain range, the highest in Europe after the Alps and the most significant section of the Cordillera Penibética. The protected area encompasses 86,208ha of torrential rivers, sheer-sided gorges, stony scree slopes, glacial lakes between snowy summits and, in the foothills of the Alpujarras, cultivated terraces of almond trees and vegetables.
Designated a national park in 1998, it is one of only two in Andalucia, the other being the Dońana National Park. It retains its status of natural park, which it has been since 1989, and this covers a marginally smaller area, of 85,777ha. It was declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve in 1986, in recognition of its exceptionally diverse plant, bird and animal species.
Volcano at Nijar.
Almeria is one of the most important areas in Spain maybe in Europe for minerals. Geologists from all over come to Almeria and students come to practice their skills. The volcano is an experience to vist and millions of small garnets can be found all around the crater area and surroundings.
Interesting point....
The Almeria area is also famous for the huge number of films made here. The rugged desert type scenery has proved popular with film makers for more than 60 years and is still extensively used for many types of production even to this day. If you are a fan of " The Spaghetti Western" then you can spend time re discovering some of the most famous scenes from the likes of :- The good, The bad and The ugly. A fistful of dollars and many more epic westerns shot in around the Almeria area. Going inland a little there is the desert of Tabernas where you will find some Western movie sets such as Mini Hollywood that have been restored to their former glory and opened as tourist attractions.
